Norfolk Island – Yorlye cum look orn |
| Norfolk was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1774 and described as paradise. But things changed dramatically in March of 1788 when the first Convict Settlement was formed and the island became known as "a living hell". The last convict settlement was closed in 1855 and in June of 1856, 194 people landed from Pitcairn Island. These were the descendants of Fletcher Christian and his band of mutineers from the "Bounty", resettled to Norfolk Island by Queen Victoria. Under their gentle care, Norfolk Island returned to "paradise", and remains so today.
Today, Norfolk is an external territory under the authority of Australia but with its own Legislative Assembly, Police, Customs, Immigration and Quarantine. Few Australian laws extend to Norfolk, which is responsible for its own revenue. There is no GST. For visitors Norfolk offers an enticing mix of old world charm, spectacular scenery, a host of activities, sports and tours and the chance to indulge in tax free shopping - plus a warm welcome from the locals. The Pacific's best kept secret was once a punishment - now it's a Reward! This green island plateau is a tapestry of farmlands, forests and gardens, pierced and woven by the needles of the Norfolk Island pine trees. Scattered around Norfolk's circumference are fine sandy beaches and rock pools - nature's swimming pools that the sea has hollowed out below fluted cliffs. |
